INFORMATION
Saint Kitts & Nevis
The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, informally known as Saint Kitts and Nevis, is a nation comprising the islands of Saint Kitts and Nevis, situated in the West Indies within the Leeward Islands chain of the Lesser Antilles. Covering an area of 261 square kilometers (101 sq mi) and hosting approximately 50,000 residents, it stands as the smallest independent state in the Western Hemisphere in terms of both size and population, and holds the distinction of being the world’s tiniest sovereign federation. As a Commonwealth realm, it recognizes Charles III as its monarch and head of state.
The capital, Basseterre, rests on the larger of the two islands, Saint Kitts, serving as the primary hub for both passenger and cargo transportation, notably through its bustling port. Nevis, the smaller island, lies about 3 kilometers (2 mi) southeast of Saint Kitts, separated by a narrow channel known as The Narrows.
Historically, the British dependency of Anguilla was once part of this union, collectively known as Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla. However, Anguilla opted for secession and remains a British overseas territory. The neighboring islands of Sint Eustatius, Saba, Saint Barthélemy, Saint-Martin/Sint Maarten, and Anguilla are situated to the north-northwest, while Antigua and Barbuda lie to the east and northeast, along with the uninhabited Redonda island and Montserrat to the southeast.
Saint Kitts and Nevis hold the distinction of being among the earliest European-colonized islands in the Caribbean. Saint Kitts, in particular, served as the site of the first British and French Caribbean colonies, earning it the moniker “The Mother Colony of the West Indies.” It achieved independence from British rule in 1983, making it the most recent British territory in the Caribbean to gain sovereignty
