Dominica
The Commonwealth of Dominica, officially known as Dominica, is an island nation situated in the Caribbean Sea. It forms part of the Windward Islands chain within the Lesser Antilles archipelago. The capital, Roseau, is located on the western side of the island. Dominica’s nearest neighbors are two constituent territories of the European Union, Guadeloupe to the northwest and Martinique to the south-southeast. Covering a land area of 750 km2 (290 sq mi), its highest point is Morne Diablotins, reaching an elevation of 1,447 m (4,747 ft). According to the 2011 census, the population stands at 71,293.
The island’s history is rich, initially settled by the Arawak people from South America around the fifth century, later replaced by the Kalinago by the 15th century. Christopher Columbus is believed to have encountered the island on Sunday, 3 November 1493, hence its name, derived from the Latin term for Sunday, “dies Dominica.” Dominica was colonized by Europeans, mainly the French from the 1690s to 1763, during which enslaved Africans were imported to work on coffee plantations. Following the Seven Years’ War, Great Britain took possession in 1763, gradually establishing English as the official language. The island gained independence as a republic in 1978.
